The University of South Carolina football squad worked out for about two and a half hours Tuesday night at the Bluff Road practice fields in the high heat and humidity of a South Carolina summer. The players were in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts for the second straight night.

"The weather was a little sticky, but not too bad," said Head Coach Steve Spurrier following the workout. "Pretty sloppy practice for the offense," he continued. "Most of the offensive linemen don't know whether to go right or left. The defensive guys always play faster than the offensive guys in shorts. Nothing has changed about that. Hopefully we can run right through Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and all them other schools the way we run through our line right now. But our line always seems to get a little bit better as the season goes. Hopefully we'll do that again this year."

Sophomore offensive lineman Garrett Anderson was held out of contact drills tonight. "He sort of cracked a little bone in his (right) hand," said Coach Spurrier. "I think he's out a day or two. He's got it wrapped up."

Mike West, who has played linebacker and wide receiver during his South Carolina career, practiced with the secondary on Tuesday. "He went to defensive corner tonight and looked pretty doggone good," said Coach Spurrier. "He intercepted a pass or two and that may be his position. He's built like that kid from Arkansas that was a first round pick. Maybe that's the position that Mike's been looking for."

Wide receivers Joe Hills (right knee sprain) and Leon Gamble (hamstring) were also held out of drills on Tuesday.

The Gamecocks will return to the practice field Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. The practice is closed.
