Blacksburg, Va. - South Carolina track and field teams started off the season with a strong performance at day one of the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday, earning four top five finishes.

USC's jumpers Derrick Pressley and Kemesha Whitmire posted the top finishes of the day. Pressley earned fourth place in the triple jump with a leap of 14.65m, while All-American Whitmire jumped for 12.36m for second place in the triple jump. Distance runner Karen Wigal placed third in the 5000m with a time of 18:02.10 and Precious Akins earned fifth place in the weight with a throw of 15.79m.
 

 

In other events, returning All-American Alexis Joyce advanced to the finals of the 60m dash with a third place finish time of 7.38 in Friday's semifinals. Also look to see returning All-American Tiffany Ross make a run for the title in the 60m hurdles after advancing Friday in second place with a time of 8.50.

In men's action, Rodney Martin and Leroy Dixon held the No. 2 and 3 spots to advance to Saturday's finals of the 60m, while freshman Jason Richardson debuted finishing second in the 60m hurdles semifinals with a time of 7.96.

Saturday's schedule begins with the women's high jump at 10 a.m. and concludes with the last event at 4:35 p.m. Results will be available on www.uscsports.com
